As the head Air-to-Air Intercept instructor at TOPGUN, one of the key lessons I taught was that when two aircraft begin an intercept—typically 100 to 200 miles apart and closing at speeds exceeding 800 miles per hour—they have less than eight minutes until they meet at the “merge.” The pilots’ success depends not only on precise, well-timed actions in that critical moment but also on the preparation leading up to the intercept.
